Getting Dressed Up for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Getting Dressed Up for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

On July 15 the final installment of the Harry Potter series, the Deathly Hallows Part 2, hits cinemas around Australia, and to celebrate a group of my friends and I have decided to dress up in character on the night. However, unlike the countless others that will be in costume, I’m far from what you’d call a “Harry Potter tragic”.

Though it’s a crime in some social circles, I happily confess that I haven’t read a single one of the Harry Potter books. I haven’t even Googled how the series ends – though I’m assuming some people die, some get married, and Ron finally has Snape’s baby? The reason I haven’t read them is mostly because I’ve enjoyed the movies so much that I  don’t want to be one of the people that walk out of the saying “but they left so much of the book out!.”

“So, if you’re not part of the Harry Potter Hardcore, why are you dressing up?” I hear you ask.

Well, I haven’t been peer pressured into it and it’s not a stunt for my next Facebook profile picture [though that will probably happen anyway]. It’s simply because this film represents a significant point in film and literary history.

It’s widely accepted that the Harry Potter saga is one of the best literary works of our time and over almost a decade, and Warner Bros. has done it justice in bringing it to the big screen. I have thoroughly enjoyed them and though I haven’t read the books, I can remember walking out of the cinema after each installment and being more engrossed in the story than when I walked in.

For many this movie will be the final farewell to a story that is destined to live on far beyond our years, for others it will simply be the last time they’ll have a good reason to wear a wizard costumes in public for a while. For me, it’s a combination of both and I’m mainly in for the fun of it.

In doing this, I can’t help but feel how funny it is that dressing up in character has become a much more common thing; and it’s not just Harry Potter that people get dressed up for. I’m curious to find out more, so if you’ve ever dressed up for the release of a new movie, game, book or whatever, put it in a comment and tell me about it.

I haven’t decided on a costume yet either, so put your suggestions in the comment box to the right for that too.

  3. I’m not a hardcore fan either! I’ve never read the books, but I absolutely love the movies! So some of my friends and I have decided to dress up for the movie! I’m excited about it, and I will dress up as Bellatrix!
